How to Remove Glitter
From skin, face, hair and clothes — without the scrubbing
Glitter has a reputation for being impossible to remove. That reputation is mostly earned by craft glitter — the plastic stuff with no regard for your skin or your bathroom floor.
Cosmetic-grade glitter, especially gel-based formulas like Bolt Balm, is designed to come off cleanly. The key is technique. Here is exactly what works.
The Fastest Way to Remove Glitter from Skin
Oil is the most effective glitter remover. It breaks down the adhesive base and lets the glitter slide off without scrubbing.
What you need: coconut oil, baby oil, olive oil, or an oil-based makeup remover. Any of these work.
- Apply oil to a cotton pad — dampen it, do not saturate.
- Press the pad against the glittered area and hold for 10 seconds. Do not wipe yet.
- After 10 seconds, gently wipe in one direction.
- Repeat with a fresh pad until clean.
- Follow with your regular face wash to remove the oil residue.
The hold-before-wipe step is everything. Holding gives the oil time to dissolve the base. Skip it and you will just smear the glitter around.
How to Remove Glitter from Your Face
Around the eye area
For the eye area, use micellar water instead of straight oil — it is gentle enough for skin near the eyes and effective on cosmetic glitter.
- Soak a cotton pad in micellar water.
- Hold it over the eye for 15-20 seconds.
- Gently sweep downward — never drag across or toward the eye.
- Use a cotton swab dipped in micellar water for glitter along the lash line.
Cheeks, temples and the rest of the face
The oil method works perfectly here. Apply oil-based remover to a cotton pad, press and hold for 10 seconds, then wipe. One or two passes and it is gone.
How to Remove Glitter from Your Body
Body application covers large surface areas, so efficiency matters here.
In the shower
Apply body oil or hair conditioner directly to the glittered skin before getting it wet. Let it sit for 30 seconds, then rinse. The oil loosens the glitter and it washes right off. This is the fastest method for large areas like shoulders and arms.
Out of the shower
Use a large cotton pad or soft cloth with oil-based remover. Press, hold 10 seconds, wipe. For areas like the collarbone and arms, this takes under a minute.
Avoid exfoliating scrubs — they do not work better than oil and they irritate skin.
How to Remove Glitter from Your Hair
Hair is the trickiest surface because glitter can catch on the cuticle and travel up the shaft. The trick is to condition before you shampoo.
- Apply a generous amount of hair conditioner to dry hair — before getting in the shower.
- Work it through from root to tip with your fingers.
- Let it sit for 2-3 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly while combing through with a wide-tooth comb.
- Shampoo as normal after rinsing.
Conditioner smooths the cuticle and lets the glitter slide off instead of catching. Shampooing first tends to make it worse.
How to Remove Glitter from Clothes and Fabric
Fabric fibers trap glitter differently than skin. Oil does not work here — you need mechanical removal first.
- Use a lint roller to pick up as much loose glitter as possible.
- Press packing tape or masking tape firmly into the fabric, then peel. Repeat.
- Wash the garment normally after the tape method handles the bulk.
Avoid rubbing or brushing — it pushes the glitter deeper into the weave and makes it harder to remove.
What Not to Do
- Do not scrub. Scrubbing breaks up the glitter into smaller pieces, spreads them further, and irritates skin. Press, hold, and wipe instead.
- Do not use dry cotton. Dry cotton causes static, which attracts glitter. Always dampen the pad first.
- Do not skip the hold. Wiping immediately without holding smears rather than lifts. Ten seconds makes all the difference.
- Do not panic. Cosmetic glitter is designed to come off. It is not craft glitter. Give the oil or micellar water time to work and it will.
